I actually did move South for the sake of a job once. Worst year of my life. Although maybe if we did do it en masse we could create a bit of multicultural warmth and joy in the Northern ghettoes of East London. Ah but this really does take the piss – and notice the only opposing point of view in the article is coming from Labour MPs defending their party’s gentrification, sorry, regeneration schemes.
What? Is this supposed to be a new policy? Can’t say I’m spotting any difference between this and the way the governments of the day have ran things since Thatcher slithered into power. Tis why I ended up where I am: there’re bugger all jobs going in the North East, and bugger all interest in doing anything substantial to change that.
the Tories are in a much worse position in the Northern England than ever before
In Manchester, they came fourth in a lot of council elections – we beat them, as I think did the “Renewal” side of the Respect split – but I dunno if the rest of the North is as Tory free. I think even in the North, a lot of disillusioned former Labour voters have given up on their strategy of not voting and moved on to vote Tory.

All very good for the ruling class if there’s mass internal migration – more competition in labour markets, allowing greater “flexibility”.
Note that the Tories are in a much worse position in the Northern England than ever before… This report won’t have helped much.

I’m talking in terms of decades, here.
As an aside: I am always puzzled why under New Labour anyone would vote Tory. Cameron’s resemblence to bliar – even down to hand-gestures – is spooky.
it is amazing that they always somehow manage it – just when you think they couldn’t be more offensive…
Voting blue tory is one way of giving the red tories a good kicking. Not one that I’d endorse, mind, but it’s a bad tactic employed for a good reason.
I’m moving down to Central London – the wages are rubbish in the north. EVERYBODY ABANDON SHIP
it’s your funeral
