It’s an exaggeration to say that Tesco killed Stalybridge, but only just. It pretty much delivered the death blow; Stalybridge no longer exists as a market town. It does still exist, just about, and going back home to look up at the dark moors above the town still fills my heart with a profound feeling of something or other. So now, Tesco plans to massively extend their superstore and to blot out the sky with a dirty great multistorey car monstruosity. They’ve taken the life out of Stalybridge, now they want to take its soul.
SMASH TESCO!

Hi Dave, I’ve also written a similar blog post on the subject with ‘East of the M60′ entitled ‘Welcome to Stalytraz?’.
Stuart.
Did you attend the meeting? I work evenings, so I would appreciate any reports you could give.
Sadly no, so I’m going to have to wait for tommorrow’s Reporter for the latest.
Stuart.
Hi there,
Trawling the web for stalybridge blogs as I am new to it all. I’ve recently moved back to my hometown of Stalybridge having lived elsewhere for a few years. I have to admit that Stalybridge is looking very sad and empty, which is so sad. I kinda thought that the canal, although mighty expensive would be a step to regenerating the town, and to hear recent reports that Tesco are going to be building a 2 storey car park right over the canal just seems wrong.
I actually thought that when they built tesco it would make me shop in S/B more as there would be more car parking, but I’ve heard stories of them fining you for doing this and there being no other free car parks in S/B ( a BIG reason for me not going into the town).
Do we know if they got planning permission??
I have to admit, since term started again I’ve hardly gone near Stalybridge, and have completely lost track of Tesco and the opposition. I suggest you write to sayno2tesco[at]gmail[dot]com to find out more.
