There’s been a steady trickle of news over the past few months related to a possible American attack on Iran, with no one story standing out over the generally ominous hum. After reaching a fevered pitch in Spring the U.S. administration’s anti-Iranian rhetoric died down a little after the incident with the captured British troops but it’s been slowly building up again over the Summer, with Bush’s heart and “mind” now pretty much won by Cheney’s needling.
Meanwhile, outside the White House, American pressure for an attack never went away, with the mainstream presidential hopefuls trying to outdo each other in making Dubya look like a long-haired peacenik Jessie. Clinton foams at the mouth about not limiting the options on some kind of table, McCain rewrites imperial jingoism into innocent Beach Boys songs, but the foul biscuit of war goes to Obama who, not satisfied with Iran, wants to kick off a nuclear war with Pakistan too. What a prick. The mainstream media, meanwhile, seem to be satisfied with repeating their 2003 propaganda with all the ‘q’s tippexed out and replaced with ‘n’s.
In short, the possibility of war is very real – or at least, so concludes a recent study by leading British academics published in Raw Story -and very terrifying:
The study concludes that the US has made military preparations to destroy Iran’s WMD, nuclear energy, regime, armed forces, state apparatus and economic infrastructure within days if not hours of President George W. Bush giving the order…
- Any attack is likely to be on a massive multi-front scale but avoiding a ground invasion. Attacks focused on [suspected] WMD facilities would leave Iran too many retaliatory options, leave President Bush open to the charge of using too little force and leave the regime intact.
- US bombers and long range missiles are ready today to destroy 10,000 targets in Iran in a few hours.
- US ground, air and marine forces already in the Gulf, Iraq, and Afghanistan can devastate Iranian forces, the regime and the state at short notice.
I can’t be bothered going over the case against war in detail because, surely, we’re all convinced now that any attack would be unjustifiable, unnecessary, illegal, and catastrophic almost beyond words. (If you’re not convinced, CASMII have put together a decent factsheet that you should really check out before leaving bitchy comments). No, the real question is how can we stop this?
The report suggests that the U.S. is likely to be alone in any such endeavor, save for Israel and maybe the U.K. Though the anemic American antiwar movement needs to get its stuff together sharpish, and we should give a thought for Israel’s courageous refuseniks, it is surely those of us in the maybe state have the most to play for.
Gordon Brown knows by now how much we all hate asking the Americans how high they want us to jump, but his cooling off of the special relationship so shamelessly exaggerated in the press seems to have no more substance than that he wears a suit, and not jeans, to Camp David. If public pressure lets up he may well be tempted to join the war, and he is likely to get it through Parliament with little trouble – and it seems almost certain that airbases on British soil (not to mention Diego Garcia) will play a role.
Nevertheless, his recent posturing shows that Brown is wary of the public, unsure of how much more we can tolerate. Somehow – by protests, by writing letters to MPs, by threatening a general strike if need be – we need to settle that doubt. Enough is enough, we will not attack Iran, we will not support an attack on Iran, we will not allow Iran to be attacked from our soil. That’s all there is to it.

it would be a catastrophe if they did this
Amen. I’m gonna think on this, throw ideas out back & forth and create a matrix of action. If we can’t stop the organ grinder we can at least stop our NuLab monkeys.
I think a clear and timely signal that these particular monkeys will have NOTHING TO DO WITH IT (as opposed to just not sending troops of our own), it could well dent the confidence of the War Party and slow things reet down. The American refuseniks, God bless ‘em, could certainly do with us buying them some time.
Nothing of consequence will happen in Iraq until Bush leaves office, he has said so himself. As for Iran, well the Empire needs Eternal War against someone, anyone, specially the disobedient. Will 2008 be another year of terror, where Americans are to afraid to vote out the Republicans (although Dems like Hillary would not be a huge improvement) and clean up house? I think you already know the answer to that.
I dunno about that Rafael, I think you might be placing too much blame at Bush’s personal door. His hands could have been forced and effectively tied months ago by the Democratic-controlled Congress; that it hasn’t is as much about them as it is about him. And while you never know, we could get a surprise President Kucinich or Edwards, the Democrats might well get in in 2008 but it will still be President More-of-the-same.
True enough. The Democrats have been as cowardly as their Republicans opposition has called them, ironically by calling them pansies, the Rethugs have managed to keep the Dems compliant. Then again, they have as much invested in Empire as anyone else. I mean with the Israeli lobby sharpening the sword of Damocles, I don’t expect a lot of bravery out of them.
Now you’re on the money!
I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but the media only really reports on the candidates who are getting the most funding. New record amounts of donations make the news, but the polls don’t get a mention. This means that, whatever the party, the ‘mainstream’ (or, ’serious’) candidates will be those who represent the rich (including, these days, the Military-Industrial Complex and, obviously, the Israel Lobby).
Notice that while Kucinich is pretty much absent from the news and Edwards gets little coverage beyond sarky put-downs, there is one anti-war candidate who gets on TV: Ron Paul, who speaks sense on The War Against Terror but who’s basically way off to the right with Reagan and Thatcher as far as social economics are concerned. Clearly, his prominence represents dissent amongst the capitalist elite, with some seeing the Iraq war (or, more broadly, T.W.A.T.) as a great big cock-up, but most still firmly behind it.
Back on Iran, here’s some terrifying revelations: http://tenpercent.wordpress.com/2007/08/31/cheney-pr-offensive-for-attack-on-iran-launching-in-september/
Dave, you’re writing too much; I can’t keep up. I think your brain is fizzing also; the last post started on screws (prison guards)and ended on being screwed (debt) – it was consistent in that respect.
I read that you were sponsored – credit where credit is due, congratulations.
Oh, the will-they-won’t-they on Iran, I almost wish they will; the cyclical presentation of the possibility is tiring. As Rafael points out; I’m sure the Empire needs it, yet am personally unsure as what might transpire.
It’s odd, I sit in cabs darting through Tehran and look at the gradual embrace of capitalism and think, “this place kinda works”, I see that we are solving internal issues – with a few steps back at times, but it’s kinda together. The memory of war is still close in peoples minds and it seems they are freshly moving from it. The youth; the majority portion of the nation, grew from this environment and have freshly been dressed with the finest distractions money can buy – some nice SLKs recently included. I pass the embassies of many nations before I sit in my office serving the many corporations and wonder in amazement. How can all this be subject to the results of those cyclical threats?
The handful of noteworthy players I speak to, seem convinced the words are empty and I always ask myself whether they are closing their eyes – if they can’t see war; war can’t see them.
It’s titillating, the suggestion of an attack; the repercussions! – put your mind there. Britain must surely be torn in such an event. The historical links; the large European trading partners; Eastern trading partners – big deals are being cut in increasing volumes.
There is too much to say, but I simply wanted to say that it all seems so unreal from where I’m sitting.
Keep up the good work.
Dave, I ahve posted the ACTUAL text of what’s been happening between IAEA and Iran; not what the zionist media and Emrican propaganda is distorting. Let’s just spread the word and stop this madness!
American, not Emrican (butter fingers!)
Thanks for that, Naj – I see Rick has already reposted it. El Baradei has been saying this for months though, hasn’t he?
I think most people (at least within my circle of acquaintances) are now way beyond believing the war machine’s propaganda. The challenge is turning that cynicism into real opposition. Lies in the service of mass murder, it seems, can no longer fool us but nor can they particularly shock us.
Recent developments in the UK are encouraging, but I fear it may be too little too late.
David, things should be slowing down about now, I have to get my shit together for my new life at uni.
Will-they-won’t-they? Well, there’s perhaps slightly more opposition in high places than in the case of Iraq, but I’m not convinced it’s enough. The “intelligence” coming out at the moment suggests a blitzkrieg in the works – three days’ full spectrum assault on Iran’s military – but nothing so demanding as an invasion. Less effort will be needed to “justifiy” it than in the case of Iraq, certainly, and the effort is already well underway.
It’s not hopeless, but I don’t think it’s just going to boil over. Real opposition is needed, both from grassroots antiwar movements in the West and from some skillful diplomacy in Iran. I mean, when the British sailors were seized, I feared the worst – that it had been engineered by the US and would be used as an excuse for an imminent attack. Could I have been more wrong! Hopefully the IRI leadership can give a repeat performance, and cut off any international support for this venture.
The Americans WILL attack Iran. You should have no doubt about that. This goes beyond the needs of the US military-industrial complex. Right before your eyes, under our noses, a coalition of elite industrial interests have laid the groundwork for a permanent coup de tat in the United States.
Make a close study of the provisions of the following laws, Presidential Executive Orders, Presidential Directives, and “signing statements (where Bush sings a Bill into law, but supplies a written note stating which measures of the Bill he would be DISREGARDING)”:
Patriot Act – allows the Federal Government to seize the banking, medical, employment, education, telephone, and financial records of any person, and allows search and seizure of people’s homes and property without a warrant, or even the knowledge of the person concerned.
Domestic Security Enhancement Act – allows the Federal Government to intercept ANY communication addressed to ANY citizen, and without a warrant or even the knowledge of the person concerned.
Military Commissions Act – allows Bush to designate anyone, including ANY American citizen as an “unlawful combatant against the USA”, and to subject them to military tribunal justice, without legal representation.
Presidential Directive 51- allows Bush to seize control of EVERY section of American transport, communications, and industrial sector (public or private), in the event of a catastrophe of natural or human origin.
Now, I humbly suggest that Bush and Cheney have not taken on such dictatorial powers just to hand them to somebody else. If you think Bush and a megalomaniac like Cheney are just going to step down gracefully you must be a true and complete idiot.
Just in case there really ARE any of you out there who do not yet grasp the TRUE extent of the depravity of the Bush administration and its neocon acolytes, I STRONGLY urge you to click on my WEBSITE link! Take a look people, and I hope it scares you!
Yeah, click on my name if yo want to know how sick the neocons really are.
Click my name on this one – watch the video!

Tricky Dicky!
Yup, the new laws are chilling. But, as you have acknowledged, it’s not so much Bush and Cheney we have to look out for, but the whole political/capitalist class. Both political parties have consistently supported the Chimp and the Emperor’s legislation – which means that corporate America as a whole is quite happy with it.
Corporate America, Corporate Europe, Corporate Asia …
Dave, did you apply to LSE?!
LSE was well out of my price range, and I couldn’t help finding it a bit sinister too, a bit too close to the capitalist elite. I went to Manchester: more affordable, more neutral, and anyway it’s home.
